Our Story – Sunrise Energy Group

In 2016, Neil Canby founded the Sunrise Energy Group (Sunrise) when he identified an opportunity to help Government and private enterprise decarbonise the energy sector by co-locating renewable generation with the electricity load. Sunrise has now become one of Western Australia’s (WA) leading renewable energy project developers with a proven successful track record of delivering positive economic and environmental outcomes for our customers.

Early success within the business led to the development of a 3MWp behind the meter solar farm for Image Resources and the renewable energy microgrid at the Peel Business Park. Both projects, developed, installed, and commissioned over multiple years have now been successfully operating since early 2021. Both projects also included elements of complexity that had never been successfully dealt with before in Australia / the WA electricity network. Demonstrating Sunrise’s willingness and confidence in our team and partners to effectively engineer and deliver commercially viable solutions.

Sunrise spent a lot of time in the early days building relationships with specialised sub-contractors who we now use on most projects and consider our partners. Consequently, we do not tender the scope of work on our projects; in fact, we bring our partners into the project early so that they can participate in the early development activities alongside us. We collectively understand that what we are often doing has not been done before, and we have a very strong attitude around open communications and learning quickly and adjusting on projects. Furthermore, we seek to have a “whole of Life” relationship with our customers and aim to develop and grow relationships so that we can work together to deliver success throughout the entire project life, including the operations and maintenance phase.

Over the years, Sunrise has continued to be involved in projects that are leading the way in the energy transition, often involving new technologies or concepts that need to be carefully researched, planned, and executed. Sunrise have been heavily involved in various green hydrogen feasibility and project FEED studies since 2019. We can now draw upon the knowledge and skills acquired from our projects to assist us in helping new customers transition to sustainable, green energy power systems.

Jarrah Solutions

Jarrah Solutions (Jarrah) is a Western Australian based company that provides electrical engineering service to several industries including airports, electrical power utilities, wind, solar, renewables, Oil & Gas and mining.When working with Sunrise, Jarrah took on the role of HV connection approval and connection design and delivery. This includes the Access Application process, through to HV submission, technical compliance reporting and commissioning sign off. They also design, procure, install and commission the connection point equipment typically in the form of a container that the project connects through to integrate with the customer’s network “behind the metre”.

Avora Energy

Avora Energy (Avora) is a Western Australian based company that provides project delivery services including Project Management and full EPC (Engineering Procurement and Construction) to the renewable energy sector.
When working with Sunrise, Avora take on the role of procurement management, construction management, electrical install, site works and mechanical assembly.

Zenith Energy

Zenith Energy (Zenith) is a specialised energy company that focuses on providing tailored power generation solutions, particularly in remote off-grid locations and urban microgrids. Zenith distinguishes itself by integrating a variety of thermal and sustainable fuel sources, along with innovative technologies, to deliver cost-effective energy solutions. In 2022 Zenith acquired Peel Renewable Energy, the owner and responsible operator of the renewable energy microgrid at the Peel Business Park (PBP). Sunrise one of the parties responsible for the development and delivery of the renewable energy microgrid, therefore we have continued to support the PBP through Zenith. We have continued to progress development work with Zenith to secure new projects and have more in the pipeline.

CKE Consulting Engineers

CKE Consulting Engineers (CKE) is a Western Australian based company that provide electrical engineering consulting services, specialising in power distribution and electrical design.
When working with Sunrise, CKE provides the low voltage electrical design and engineering support services for the project. In addition to the design and electrical drawings for the project, CKE also assists with the project inspection and commissioning tasks.

Blair Fox

Blair Fox is a West Australian family owned electricity company. They build own and operate wind farms, retail electricity to their customers, and own and operate electricity distribution networks. They deliver innovative solutions that are surprising, considered and built on deep industry knowledge. They build and maintain strong relationships with their customers.

When working with Sunrise they provide services associated with delivering onsite wind generation using refurbished quality wind turbines, in particular, as part of our regional hybrid microgrid developments.
